My friend Nathan lived in a cabin in Vermont with no electricity or running water. He fell into rounds of drinking while he worked cleaning dishes at a bakery. He and I have played phone-tag since he left Kansas last December. I called him today, and we talked until the phone fell dead. The battery, that is.
Love that guy. Wish he could marry me. That much.
Anyhow, I went to school to pick up books, which were perhaps for assignments that are not mine. ICK. I hate not knowing what's going on, so I will try asking a student who has all of my classes what's up with that.
I met the monitor Saul, who has missing teeth, but is from Africa's-- Gambia. His name is now officially written onto my National Geographic Map's Plans for Ruling the World, which I have on my wall. Lots more names, lately. Positive.
Anyhow, about yesterday.
I went to the courthouse on my own, and got there early, but there are a couple of things that I should talk about here:
The Dean outside
The Jury seating
Swearing in
The Judge
My classmates
Dean: Asked me why I was there, and I told her that I'm not certain, but that it's coming to me each day. It seemed acceptable, but I am uncertain if that was the right tactic to use. Maybe I should have given a bland answer like: I really like saving puppies or something.
Jury: The same Dean told me it was alright to sit in a jury box, during the ceremony, and two minutes later another dean was like, don't do that. I immediately got up and sat back down in the area without a complaint, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. It also probably made me look like a tool to the second dean. argh!
We were sworn in under oath by a federal judge (Hon. Ronald Ellis), who made a wonderful speech about how WE are the protectors of democracy, that our obligation is to ensure that although justice is blind, that the voices of the impotent, of the poor, of the criminals, of the voiceless, are heard. It was wonderful.
The supreme court session that I was able to watch was GREAT! Judge Lehner was old and hilarious, while being both tactful and astute. It was wonderful to see his control over the courtroom, and I was pleased to see it done. The attorneys were irritable, which seemed odd. They pretty much sucked at arguing. Oh well.
Afterward, I went out with a bunch of students and we drank. A lot. The whole evening. I really tried getting to know a lot about all of the students, that I could. Some might not have wanted to, others were all too willing, like Lana, who wants to practice animal rights law and was thoroughly intoxicated and desired to fuck everything in sight. She had me, literally in her clutches, but she was so badly intoxicated, that it was quite easy to take care of by leaving her under someone else's care. My assumption is that she will not be embarrassed at all by her actions. She is a wild one. Joanna was really sweet, but I left her with Andy, because he wanted to go out, and I was ready to go home. She wanted to go out tonight, but I am assuming that something occurred between her and Andy, so I'm guessing that that's off. It's alright though, because I wasn't per se attracted to her in a super-big way. Rather, it was just nice knowing her as a friend.
My belief is that Andy is an alpha male. I allowed for that, then. I will need to work on that in the future. It's just never justified.
Anyhow, the others are amazing, too. Lourdes likes football movies, Soumanth is not for social gatherings, Min -I dunno- I wonder if he might be in love with me, because he pays me so much attention, but then again, he's a nice guy, so you can never tell. I'm going to stick with nice guy. His girlfriend was super-hot. Ivachka is a fucking DOLL. She's also got chutzpah, which is nice when it's mixed with her verve. Monika's from Miami and a bit intimidated. Joe's from Minnesota and has techno records. Kyle is Tianae's husband, who doesn't drink and is really a cool guy. Jennifer is polite and Korean. Yasmine is a trip, and didn't want to eat. She also remains skeptical often. Nicole is my newest sister! I love Nicole. Rachel lives on my block! Melissa, Michelle, and Monika? are all roommates. Adenai is perhaps te coolest of my classmates. He is handsome, intelligent, and very pleasant to be around. I look forward to spending more time with him in the future. I could go on, but this is how much that I really tried to do this. Courtney and Violet! Violet, I love! She's awesome! Marjonne is Iranian and beautiful, too. Courtney is proper, and Jewish, and ... probably really doesn't like me. At least I know this now. MATT! Matt's awesome! Chris pissed me off, but I think we'll be masculine buddies in an antagonistic sort of a way for some time to come. All in all it was really nice. I only wish I knew what had happened to the others.
