i love nina simone so much. she's my hero. have you got any idea how great she is? here are some reasons why she's great.
she performed with more conviction than any other singer or musician i can think of, even when she was forced to play pop music that she didn't really care about, even when her voice was going, she was still unselfconscious and sexy and amazing, with the composure of a classical performer. she was exploited by her managment and went kind of mental. she was kind of mental anyway, and angry and bossy. and so passionate about the civil rights movement. i wish i was affiliated with the civil rights movement in some way so i could be even more self righteous than now. and maybe think that nina might have wanted to be my friend. even though i'm scared of her kind of. there's this amazing bit at the end of this documentary i have about her where the producers take her and her brother back to the house she grew up in, where her daugher now lives. she gets out of the car and everyone's looking at her expecting her to be all 'ooh it's so nice to be back here!', but instead she goes all distant and eventually the first thing she says is '...i feel like i want to kill myself.' she had such a hard life, but i'm pretty sure she was kind of a bitch.
