I had an interesting morning the other day. I was on my way to the optometrist when my mom came down and said we had to talk. Apparently, someone in a collections group had called my grandmother (who co-signed my student loans) and said I hadn't paid in a year, owed $9,000, and if it wasn't paid they were going to garnish her social security checks. This, of course, totally freaked her out. It really pissed me off because I knew I wasn't behind and if this was on my record, it would fuck my credit and I couldn't get a mortgage loan.
After I got back from the doc's, I checked with Sallie Mae online. I'd missed my January payment but was otherwise current. I gave them a call and they said other than this month's payment I was current and wasn't in default. They also hadn't heard of the collections group. I called the number for the collector but she couldn't talk to me because it was under my grandmother. After calling my grandmother, I called the collector back. She said she had just talked to my mom and realized they had the wrong person. The other chick has the same name and lives in the same state as my grandmother but is 22 YEARS OLD WITH A DIFFERENT SSN!!! How do you fuck that up? Wouldn't the whole grandson/social security check thing tip you off that it can't be from someone born in 1982? Criminy. Everyone was freakin' out all morning over someone else's mistake. At least all is well.
