I posted this a while back, both here on my blog and in the West Group.
This Saturday the Las Vegas Aspiring Photographer's Meetup Group is having an Astrophotography photoshoot meetup at Rhyolite, NV.
Date: 23-24 September 2017
Time: 5:00 PM PDT
Place: Goldwell Open Air Museum at Rhyolite, NV
Sunset: 7:01 PM
Moonset: 8:59 PM
The moon will be nearly new so there won't be much light from it before it sets.
I've only been on a couple of photoshoot events with this meetup group. I don't go to the regular monthly meetings because they are held in downtown Las Vegas, where there isn't much free parking and it's a bit of a schlep from where I live. So I don't really know anyone in the group.
So, I'd love it if some local SG people, especially models and photographers, would make the trip up for a fun day and night of photography.
The official event start time is 5:00 PM, but I'll be out there much earlier. hopefully by 12:00 PM. I'm planning to shoot more photos of the abandoned truck and caboose, the ruins of Rhyolite, and do a little more walking around to see if there is anything else interesting to photography. There's also things at the Goldwell Open Air Museum to take photos of, which I didn't photograph nearly as much as I would have liked the last time I visited Rhyolite. Though I'd really like to use the artwork at the museum as my foreground for Milky Way shots, I have a feeling a lot of other people will be doing the same, so I'll also be scouting for alternative locations to shoot the Milky Way. Maybe that abandoned truck will work well and few people will pick it out for their spot.
Around 3:00 PM, I'll be heading back to Beatty, NV to check into my motel and grab an early meal before heading back out to Rhyolite for sunset photography, light painting and astrophotography. I have red, green, and blue laser pointers, about 150 glow sticks in assorted colors, and 24 sparklers (at the moment... I might pick up more on my way as I pass through Pahrump, NV) for light painting.
It'll be chilly once the sun goes down, as low as the upper 40s, so bring a jacket and, perhaps, a blanket.
Even though the group has a limit on the number of attendees (I don't really know why, it's outdoors and plenty of space), there's nothing preventing anyone from just showing up. So I hope someone will take me up and meet me out there.
If you decide to come up, I drive a red Mini Cooper. I should be easy to find in Rhyolite. In Beatty, I am staying at the Atomic Inn. Beatty isn't very big. I'll probably go to the casino for my early dinner... there's a Denny's inside.
