This week sees the release of not only the new Killers cd, but the release of the second disc by one of my favorite new bands, JET!
In honor of their new cd (I've heard the first single, and let's just say that the phrase "more cowbell" has never been more appropriate,) I'll tell the story about their first cd. I was working at Spin Street and had read a lot about the band in British music mags. I had heard the first single and loved it even though it did rip off Iggy Pop's Lust for Life fairly blatantly. Even when the cd was released here in the states, no one knew who they were or cared for many months until every movie, tv show and commercial started using the song. Then there was no escape from Jet.
But early on I played their cd at work. There was a girl working there at the time who had gotten into my head from the moment I first saw her. By this point, we were doing some Sam and Diane-style arguing/flirting at work. She often would try to come up with lame excuses to come over and talk to me. When she heard the song play in the store, she came over to me, with the nerve to look all cute and shit, and asked me, "what's this song?" Of course, the answer was "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet. It was a question both the band and myself would ask for a long time to come.
