Random Notes...
-For those of you who used to live here and still read this blog: a Memphis Picadilly restaurant (and I use the term "restaurant" loosely) was recently robbed...while Mayor Willie Herenton was eating lunch there. The mayor's bodyguard chased but failed to apprehend the robber. For some reason (actually, for many reasons) this seems to sum up Memphis in a nutshell.
-I watched the Emmys the other night. Actual show time: 3 hours. Tivo'ed viewing time: 35 minutes. I hate awards shows because so much good stuff slips through the cracks. But I will watch them for two reasons. One: to perv out on stars in low-cut dresses (thank you very much, Julia L. Dreyfuss!) Two: for the comedy. Conan O'Brian had a few funny lines, and old fave Bob Newhart proved he is still the master of timing, but the night belonged to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert who may go down in history as the funniest presenters ever! Check YouTube for the clip (I suppose...)
-The new fall TV season starts soon (some shows sooner than others.) Lost gets cranked up in October. Sopranos comes back on somewhere around Tim LaHaye's 7th "Left Behind" novel. But there's one new show starting up next week. This one could be really good or really bad or so bad it's really good again. It's called "Fashion House." The format is based on Spanish soap-operas which air in prime-time 5 days a week, but have a set number of weeks to run. And then it's over. Kinda like an extended mini-series. "Fashion House" stars...are you ready...Morgan Fairchild and Bo Derek. And in the promo ad for it, they bitch-slap each other. Talk amongst yourselves...
-Pete Yorn has a new cd out this week. Haven't heard it yet.
-There are always hot topics that tend to polarize people. War in Iraq, abortion, etc. People tend to be (in the words of Granny Clampett,) fer it or agen it. I have seen the new divider. The thing that will put people on one side or the other. No one is going to be in-between. This thing could cause wars. It's the new song "London Bridge" by Fergie from the Black-Eyed Peas. Build your shelters now.
