Move over Norah Jones and Rod Stewart... the old people have a new favorite!
My main job for the last few years has been as a manager in music retail. Whenever white people over the age of 35 come in the store, they're almost always looking for certain artists, most of whom have invariably been featured on NPR. Norah Jones, Allison Kraus, Michael Buble, Bonnie Raitt. Old white people music. Not that some of these artists aren't good, but, puh-leeeze!
So there's a new kid in town. He performed recently on the Today Show or one of those early morning programs that only old white people watch right before they get the kids off to school in the SUV. And now all of the OWP are coming in to the store to buy his new cd. The artist in question: Rhett Miller. Yes, Rhett Miller from the Old 97's.
The OWP, of course, have never heard of the Old 97's. Or Rhett Miller for that matter. Until he appeared on Good Morning OWP. And when I tell them that he's been around for a while, they act stunned. "I've never heard of him until now!" Well, maybe that's because the only time you let yourself be exposed to music is in-between weather reports...
