A VolleyBlog
So.
StCyr recently asked for an update on the tournament the weekend past. Did we kick ass ? Not really. We were on the receiving end of the ass kicking.
Here's the deal.. I play with friends i've been playing with for years. Most of us are in our 40's and we find ourselves playing young punks all the time. They're tall, strong, and can jump 12 feet into the air, raining volleyballs upon our heads like a scene from any dungeoun seige movie.
The frustrating thing for me is that I'm the oldest - 49 years. I have osteoarthritis in my right knee (which results in painfully sleepless nights after ball) but i'm the one moving fast, running, diving, blocking, etc.
So i get frustrated. Killing myself while the most of the rest refuse to move for the ball, and just plain play badly.
I wouldn't ever say this anywhere else because i dont want to hurt any feelings. I just want to play my remaining years as competitivly as possible. I probably dont have many years left with this shithead of a knee.
So anyway - last saturday in the tournament - we did have our moments. We weren't the worst team there - and we did take the odd game from the better teams - we just didn't play as well as a seasoned team should - mainly because some of the folks continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. (i learn from mine and rarely make the same one twice)
This was the year i decided to go all out.
I play men's 2's on monday nights. this is the most grueling. It's a young man's game - and i only just started a couple of years ago. My partner is still trying to figure out how to set a ball - but he's coming along.
Wed nights is mixed 4's - competitive (but the ball is pretty awful this year)
Thurs nights is mixed 4's - recreational. I signed up for this for the 1st time this year because despite the poor quality of ball i wanted the extra night of exercise - and the people are nice. If i know going in that it wont be competative ball - thats fine - my expectations are in the right place. I figure i can help the team grow by providing consistency and good examples of how to properly make the game flow... and it seems to be working already.
my goal - get in as much ball as i can - better myself, lose more weight, and spend time outdoors with folks i like as long as i can.
as far as the pain goes - because everyone asks - i'd rather do something i love with pain, than do nothing comfortably.
so there you have it ... all you never wanted to know about me and volleyball
have a great weekend folks.

Thanks for pointing me out in the hopefuls group I'm not a popular choice but my heart swells with pride when someone does happen to mention me.
Yeah, it sucks when they are gone. I've found I'm perfectly comfortable traveling by myself, but being the one left home is a bucket of boredom. Good luck with it!
