A pleasant evening of modern Epee tonight. Historical sword systems are my real interest, but the modern form of fencing is a fun game.
Fenced against one of the young chaps who does competitions, he's early 20's (quite a bit younger than me), has better reach, and trains more.
But he got off to a bad start, lost the first 5 points, and his game never really recovered, I beat him 15-12.
Thing is, afterwards he was visibly upset and shaken to have lost to someone who isn't a serious competitor, whereas I really wasn't that bothered about having won. I really don't mind loosing a fight as long as I don't make a total prat of myself.
It occurs to me that this is why I've always done OK at stuff - education, work, sports, whatever, but never been really successful at anything. I just don't really care enough.
