Go Sheffo are a local fanzine that I occasionally write for. A couple of years ago they had an incredible idea to convert the now defunct cooling towers on the outskirts of Sheffield into giant works of art. Designs were submitted from people all over the world and the idea really caught the imagination of the local people.

Then they went and won the Channel...

A mcguffin is a narrative device used by an author to instigate a series of events, motivate characters or advance the story. They are not intrinsic to the plot, as they only exist to serve one purpose, but their importance to character development and storyline is immense. An ambition of the main character, for example, is a mcguffin - it is a character trait that...

Hmmm. My erstwhile mutterings have slowed down of late. I'd apologise, but I'm not that sort of guy - sorry.

I have been overly preoccupied with my photo blog recently - www.dayofthedave.blogspot.com - which is alot of fun but also an easy way of updating without actually trying. I always liked taking pictures, and I wasn't too bad at it either, but I think I...

Nostalgia can be a dangerous thing... it can generate sentences like "those were the days" or skewer your memories into a warped, and usually more positive, version of events. It can make you long for a previously destructive relationship, or create an illusion of friendship in people that never really existed. This is all perfectly understandable; as we get older we realise more and more...

Another week... another intense period of unintentional procrastination. My business partners from London came up this weekend, as did my girlfriend. We all had a fantastic time drinking and eating and smoking and... playing hip-hop karaoke (that last one I'm not too proud of).

I have so much work on at the moment that I feel that any time spent doing anything other than that...

Been a strange week. Drunk for most of it, working for the rest. I've eaten one meal a day for the last four days. Feeling exhausted and exasperated, like my patience is running out but I don't know what with. I thought I'd make my life as simple and manageable as possible, but people and events just keep coming along and usurping me as controller...

This seems to be the week for strangeness. I fly to Germany tonight but my pup fell ill a couple of days ago. Currently staying overnight at the vets with a drip in him. So, no sleep, panicky about how he is and waking up with nightmares. Too worried to drink as I'll turn into a big weepy girl!
None of us controls our destiny, we just sometimes get to take over the reins for a little while whilst the powers that be make new twists and turns for us face when we're made to let go.
