Alright, I am serious here. This is driving me fucking crazy and I need you all to think as hard as you possibly can. Think back to the mid-90's, maybe getting close to 2000. Think about when those Goosebumps books got really popular, and all the other weird scary "intermediate" novels that were published for kids in late elementary school or early middle school. Think hard.
I don't remember what the book was called. I only remember the cover.
On the cover it showed the front of a house, really just the front door and a big window to the right of the door. I think there was a girl standing at the front door, and she might have been looking up at the window in horror. Standing inside the house, looking at her through the window, was a giant dog standing on its back legs. Not standing on its back legs the way a normal dog does, but standing like a man would. Except it wasn't a man, it was a big dog. Much taller than the girl, looking down at her in a sort of menacing way. Thinking back, it looked kind of like an Irish Wolfhound or something like that. White, curly hair. It was standing facing the window, so it was seen head-on in the picture, and was looking at the girl kind of out of the corner of its eye.
I also remember, very vaguely, the part of the book where the main character encountered the dog thing. I think there might have been more than one of them, and they were sort of the "workers" around this creepy house. The book was more about the house than the dog things, they were just sort of a weird addition to it.
This could be completely off, but I want to think that the title of the book had something to do with the street that the house was found on. Either that, or it had something to do with Halloween. I'm torn between thinking that it's either of those, but it could be both.
PLEASE tell me one of you remembers this book. I want so badly to know the title of it and see that scary cover again. But I seem to be the only person in the goddamn world who read this book. I probably imagined it, who knows. I even asked 4chan about it, seriously. No one has ever heard of it.

back in 2007 I gave a vague description of an old pulp sci-fi novel I read as a kid. within a day, I received a reply with all the info I needed. (http://www.whatsthatbook.com/index.php?xq=841)
then again, I posted another, similar description of a horror book I had read, and have never heard back from anyone. still, you may have some luck with them. I was super impressed by the site.
if that one doesn't work, it looks like this site is trying something in a similar vein: http://www.librarything.com/groups/namethatbook
good luck scratching that itch!
