I was reading the personal ads of the Village Voice while going to the bathroom today. And something occurred to me. The personal ads have always been a habit of mine, probably because of the curiousity that's always got me saying "I wonder what's out there. What are people looking for in love? In life?" and the idea of someone catching my eye, even though I'm quite satisfied at the moment. And a lot of times, they're a real hoot I mean, some of them are just so bad.
But instead of laughing today, I got a bit sad. Who are these people so desperate they would take a chance in a newspaper? Who are these girls looking for "sugar daddies"? Or couples looking for a third partner? I don't really see regular people looking for pen pals or anything, although that probably does exist. It just depressed me for a moment. It reminded me of that movie "Happiness" where the guy does nothing but get drunk and make perverted crank calls to women in the phonebook while masturbating. There's just a certain sadness to it, it's alienating.
