I just heard on the radio something that well, utterly disgusted me. I'm no saint, and I have done some pretty awful things in the past, but what I thought I'd bring to your attention really scrapes the barrel in hateful behaviour. Some months back , police in the town of Hereford - it's in the West of England, bordering Wales, encountered an elderly man, obviously in some distress, walking about the ancient town. The police were concerned, and got a doctor to examine the man, now in the police station, and the examination showed the poor fellow was suffering from dementia. He had no I.D., and all the clothes he wore were brand new. He could hardly speak, but he was heard to mutter the name 'Roger Curry', so that's what he was called. What words he did manage to speak, were in an obvious American accent. Other than that, nothing was known about him. He went to live in a care home, where the staff made him feel at home, saddened by his plight. After many months of detective work by police, and amateur sleuths combing the internet, it was found, to the utter disgust of all concerned, that he had been deliberately left, in a far corner of England, from where it would have been impossible for him to get back home, by his Wife and Son, who, when questioned said that they couldn't cope, despite living in an affluent area of California. They could cope; they just didn't want to pay for the 76 year old's care. The fucking bastards. Roger Curry - it was his name, has now gone back to America, to live in a care home there. Legal proceedings against his family are being drawn up, and a person in England has been arrested in connection with the crime. I cannot conceive how terrified and bewildered Mr Curry must have been when abandoned - already internally alone because of the illness, there must, at least be a few 'markers' that mean you know familiar faces or voices, but to be dumped (for he most surely was) in a place where you know no-one, and can't even gain solace from hearing a familiar accent - that must be terrifying. If I could mete out justice, I'd have his wife and son drugged, put in a plane with bags over their heads, and dropped in the Namib Desert, in south western Africa. I believe that 'Namib' in local dialect means 'Nothing'. This news story stopped me in my tracks, and brought tears to my eyes. It was a cold, selfish pre-meditated crime. If you want to 'lose' someone, then the Welsh Marches are a damn good place to do it: hundreds of square miles of desolate moorland, outcrops and bogs. Lots of very small towns that most tourists have never heard of, let alone visit. Hereford is a large town, and home of the S.A.S., but it isn't London. The poor guy. I hope he's as well as he can be. His relatives... I can only hope that there's a special hell set aside for them.
