So, the masses have decided... and the UK will be parting company with the EU. I voted 'IN', and so, when it all goes pear-shaped, which it will (starting with the minor amount of one hundred billion pounds being wiped off the Stock Market today), my conscience will be clear. Lots of people voting yesterday had never done so before, and a lot were totally ignorant of what to do. I spoke to lots of people prior to the vote, and was horrified at how little they knew about the EU. Several thought that we had joined only a couple of years ago. Others thought that it was run by the UK, who paid for all of it, or that the UK paid most - actually it's Germany, (€27bn a year), then France (€24bn a year), then the UK - a steep drop off to (€14bn a year). Those are International Monetary Fund figures. Other people I spoke to had no real idea of what countries were in the EU - I learnt from one young person that Russia and Canada were members, and they were most insistent that they were right. Others, who never voted before said that they would do what their friends did, and went. (complaining that they had to use a pencil in the polling station). Several more said that they'd vote as family told them, or by what the shabloid press had informed them. I was amused, however, at the vitriol aimed at Jeremy Corbyn (a man who does an amusing Labour Party leader impression), for basically... well, doing nothing, despite his party wishing to remain in the EU. A Labour MP today blamed Corbyn's predecessor, the equally useless Ed Milliband, calling him "A tosspot", and said that he was going to find him, and punch him in the face, because of his influence in getting the shambolic Corbyn elected as Labour Leader. And that's the UK today. So when everything starts getting super expensive, and the lights start going out, or the gas stops, or the toilet won't flush (most UK utilities are EU owned), don't come whining to me. My conscience is clear. As I write this, I'm wearing a shirt with a Noam Chomsky quote on it, viz.: "The general public doesn't know what's happening, and it doesn't even know that it doesn't know." This shirt was my next clean one, put on today. When I heard the news, I looked at it, and thought: Damn right!
