In light of this whole Hurricane Irma stuff I'm really sick of seeing posts about god and prayer. Right now my Mom and her sister are in the middle of one of the worst natural disasters since Hurricane Andrew and the Facebook feed is full of prayers and love for God.
For me saying " I'll pray for you" is like saying I'll do nothing but edify my own ego. Multiple scientific studies have shown that prayer has absolutely no effect on the fate of a human being in moral peril yet people still cling to it. My opinion is that people who take action in these dire situations are the ones that affect reality, not some ethereal being or those who stand idly by ask for his intervention.
Then there is the belief in god. Some would say god is the one causing these natural disasters as a means to cleanse the population for being sinners. I have no doubt in the aftermath religious organizations will say the deaths were necessary. Also there will be those that will claim the opposite despite believing the same bullshit of their opponents.
The good news is that my Mom and her sister are on high ground so they will experience less flooding than most places but they are still falling victim to high winds. I expect tomorrow I will receive a text from my Mother as we've been texting lately and I told her to keep her phone off except to communicate.
I have no doubt they will survive.
