So since it's close to Halloween time I figured I would tell a scary, yet true story about a supernatural event I've experienced in my life. I'll explain what this picture is of later in this post but I'm sure anyone of you who are viewing it can guess.
There is a graveyard not far outside the town I live in. It's in the middle of nowhere (literally fields of nothing all around and a forest behind it) and when I was in high school my friends and I would go out there attempting to see or experience a ghost. We always saw flashing lights in the graveyard but nothing else so I became pretty brave near prom night of my senior year and took my girlfriend at the time out there for a fright.
As we drove to the dirt road entrance of the small space I saw a light flash in the woods which I decided was nothing to be fearful of. I pulled my car into the dirt driveway of the cemetery and saw the light pop up again in the woods ahead of my car. Writing it off as my headlights reflecting on trees stained with dew I didn't mention it to my gf and calmly asked her if she would like to get out of the car and walk around. Before she could answer I had shut off my headlights in preparation of her saying yes when the light returned, this time it wasn't in the woods but right in front of my car. This was the first time I got a good look at it and I can best describe it as a ball of light quickly flashing in and out as if to announce it's ominous presence.
The man in me chose to ignore the spectacle but my prom date suggested we leave. Of course I was so scared that I obeyed in calm and masculine fashion. Just as my car was on the road again and I was about to leave the area we both saw the glowing orb again. This time it was in the center of the graveyard and neither one of us held back our fear as I floored the gas in my car.
To put some exposition on this, I grew up in a family that didn't deny the existence of the supernatural. My mom had recounted experiences to me from when she was younger about living in a house she believed was haunted. Apparently there was a hallway that nobody liked to walk down because it always felt like cold hands were touching you as you did. Then there was a gate to the yard that my mother heard slam once when no one was near it.
Even though my dad never told me about any specific encounters with ghosts I will never forget what he told me when I asked him if ghosts are real then why don't people just admit it.
"They just said, 'that's not there! Even though they knew they saw it."
Ok. So I've kept anyone reading up until this point dangling long enough. The picture heading this post was taken by me at a building about a block away from my parents house. It's called the Thayer Hotel and it's one of the oldest buildings in town. Of course there are lots of rumors about it being haunted but I had my doubts because I also knew a fair amount of people that worked and or stayed in the building overnight and said they experienced nothing.
While living with my parents one year I walked by this building almost every day on my way to the local Holiday gas station to get a pack of cigarettes. At the time I took this pictures the building was for sale after the last owner had passed away. The one thing that always struck me about the place is that even though it was empty there were always condensation circles on the top part of the windows, as if it were colder on the inside of the building than the outside. Now this was in the middle of summer, in a vacant building, and I never saw any sign that anyone had come or gone. Besides, what realtor leaves the AC on in a vacant building? And why did the condensation only accumulate on the top part of the windows?
So on my walks I took pictures of the building until one day I got the shot you see at the head of this wall o text. I knew this was a significant picture because I could only see the image you all do through the viewfinder of my cell phone camera. When I looked up at the window with my own two eyes I saw an empty space with a condensation halo on the top part of the window (which you can still see if you look closely at the picture).
I must've taken like 20 pictures as I sat there stupefied but this was the best one of the bunch.
Thank you all for reading and Happy Halloween.
