Kauai 2006

Where I live, an Ancient Hula was danced.
It was: eloquent, passionate, art;
exquisite, cooperative, entertainment;
graceful, synchronized, story.
It held a mirrorstone to its people,
illumined, guided.
Hula was moment held in movement,
a chronicle of
misdeeds, suffering and
the joy of right thought and action,
Its mandate:
a love of the 'Aina.

Where I live, an important Hula was danced,
long before the appetites of Cook and crew:
bent Royal palms, to their gluttony;
devoured the fruits;
raped the women, and turned them out as pimps do.

The sailors gave gifts of cloth, bits of metal and the sickness born
of a union with beasts.
They left behind their fever dreams,
their stowaways, the rats, and mosquitoes,
then tossed down a few Shillings
to cover a night's revelry.

Missionaries came pulling cannons of Christianity
Along with the stern father that was their lord and ammunition.
'Aina became, commodity.
Hula, was bound with foreign cloth, covered neck to toe
as if to tether its Mana with cheap linen.

A hollow replica is danced now in shopping centers
by young Filipinas and little hauole girls
with parents from Encino,
Eugene, and Buck's County.

Where I live, nothing is certain, but suffering, pain.
the sailor's gifts of cloth and metal have rusted, thinned.
In number, the people too have thinned,
without work, shelter, culture or context,
they have only the sailor's new gifts:
alcohol, television and Batu:
the disturbed Uncle,
who can reach inside the very womb
to touch babies in that "wrong" way.

Where I live, an Ancient Hula, which
spoke, taught and could heal was danced,
a long time ago.
