868 dollars doesn't seem like much. A weekend trip? A months rent? What is that much money to a village or city? Even less. They have parking tickets higher than that in my town. But in another town where, after a long days work, the average person brings home 45 cents, it is a fortune. The area of Cameroon in West Africa is an area frought with disease, hunger, and crime. The area, however, was moved by pictures of Louisiana. Five chiefs of neighbouring villages took up a collection to help the people of America, a country that is known for turning a blind eye to the poorest occupied area in the world.
868 dollars. A boy put aside supplies he needed for a year of school to help the people affected by Hurricane Katrina. He had been saving his 25 cents for quite some time, but felt that the Americans needed it more. Donations ranged from 2 cents to five dollars.
868 dollars wouldn't pay for one of the several flights taken in Air Force One to survey the area and create the illusion that Bush cared. It's not enough to sign even one of the weekly pay-cheques of a single high level bureaucrat who decided where money went, as they dragged their heels while their own people were being abused and dying.
868 dollars. The people of the Cameroon villages thought that all of Louisiana was gone and their people were frightened. A state that most Africans live in each and every day. The average American spends more money on pop in a year.
868 dollars. Never has that amount of money meant more... or meant less.
868 dollars. I'm so sorry Africa. Nobody cared.
Be well my friends...
