Election '06 - Canada's Feelin' Blue
Well the number are in and it's a bittersweet result. For those of you who dont know yet, the numbers look like this...
PARTY SEATS POPULAR
CON 124 36.3%
LIB 103 30.2%
BLOC 51 10.5%
NDP 29 17.5%
GRN 0 4.5%
OTH 1 1.0%
So the bad news (Im a bad news first kinda guy) Is that the Tory's will be heading up the government for awhile.
The Good news is they are going to be on a tight leash. They wont be able to run away and screw up too bad. People will get a good look at the government, and I am sure Harper will feel obligated to do some good things to win out trust so that next election he can have a majority.
When you look at the numbers though, it's odd that NDP got less seats and more votes.. and that the Green were only a few percent behind the Bloc and had no seats. I realize its just the way that our sytem works, but I would love to see the senate reformed to such a state where it reflects the popular vote and the house is seat based.
You know what these numbers tell me? They tell me that people still believe in Liberal values... but they didn't know where to turn. I feel that Martin ran a poor campaign, glossing over things like Harpers 1997 speaches which spoke ill of Canadians... the fact that Martin called the election BEFORE Gomery was released... Or that Canada is in way better shape now than before when Mulrooney was in charge. He also didnt bring up the old Mulrooney corruption. He didn't bring up Americanization enough, and he shouldnt have appologized for saying Harper wants to Militarize Canada.. because he does. He said it in many speeches.
Harper on the other hand hit home. His message was clear. Liberals are corrupt, time for change. Thats as negative as anything Martin did, but noone called him on it. But Harper was smart in that he knew all he had to do was say GST and corrupt, and then shut his mouth for the rest of the campaign.
These are going to be some stormy years, I fear. Softwood problem will never be mentioned again, we're going to continue to get screwed on our oil and electricity. NAFTA is bad for Canada when only we obey it's rules.
I dont know about you.. but I'm feelin Blue....
More to come in the days ahead
Be Well my friends
