Ahh, SG. I've been lurking about this site for a while now, so I figured I might as well make the leap and get a subscription.
And yet, I'm nervous...the same sort of nervousness that one gets when walking into a party without really knowing anyone. The nervousness of stepping into a community of people and wondering how they'll react to you.
One of the benefits (and in some minds, problems) with the Net is that it allows one to simply watch a community from the outside, leaving little or no evidence of one's presence.
It's simple, and it's easy to do this, but at the same time in the longer term it is pointless. What good does it do to simply stand outside a room and watch all of the people in the room have fun?
The short version: None.
