I need to confess, I'm really far of being a good writer or at least far of being a person who likes to write a lot (Even that as part of my job what I do is constantly explaining complex things or processes in the best documented way).
Also I don't write too much to not to bother the 4 persons who will read this XD...
... But ...
I just felt today the need to write about a topic that involves a great part of my life and my day by day basis... and is simply related on how the Information Technology industry have changed through all of this years.
Walking today to my office I was looking at other people around the area which also work in other technology companies and I was wondering... Why are they at this time of the day (9:10 am) already outside of their offices wasting time by just fooling around? (I normally don't have any kind of prejudice and I consider that everyone is free to do whatever they want to do)
So, during this time when my head focused on that kind of actions, a lot of memories came to my mind... I just remembered that almost 18 years ago when I begin to work in technology I just felt that this was the kind of things that I wanted to do my whole life, let's say I felt in love with all "techie" related things, since then I've never regret any day I go to work (Even having some really bad bosses or sometimes not a "healthy" or peaceful environment), I've always been willing to make my every day productive for me by learning new things or simply improving on how I was developing my duties.
Comparing how was the tech people from mid to late 90's and how people who is recently joining this industry (or even sometimes people that didn't have the chance to join it in that early stage), I just realized that as the technology is advancing the knowledge about the technology is decreasing, even sometimes the adoption of the technology is not accepted at all by people who works and live from the technology. It comes to my mind when one of my coworkers (which finished a Computer Science degree and have been working in really good tech companies), came to me and say: - "I really don't like to use technology or at least don't like to explore the advantages of the new technology, I'm just accepting the basic functionalities of that technology and using it under that limit" - you can imagine how was my surprise as we where speaking about the release of a new smartphone with top of the line new technology not known before.
Thinking about how my coworker (which is not working anymore in technology, and I really think that was better for him as he's more happy now) or thinking about people who are working in the same company I work for that belongs to different departments, I really noticed that in the past, everyone no matter which department they belong (Sales, Marketing, Human Resources, etc) was involved in either the technology we where developing or either in being just involved on "what is my company doing", meanwhile now people who is not even interested on knowing the fact of what is the company about join the company to just limit themselves to do their jobs without any passion that requires any involvement on knowing about how are they also being part of the evolution of this industry.
Some if you may think that this is just a possible attack of conscience that I have ;-), but is it the Tech Industry in an Evolution or Involution curve? at least speaking about that people that belongs to it. Also, I wonder, am I an "old school" (maybe to old) Geek, who maybe is not that tolerant? I'm managing an international team of persons who need to provide services and solutions in a timely manner and so far I think I'm doing it correctly, one thing that I'm not willing to change (or at least not now or a nearby future) is the way that I express the things I like, for example, I love to use my Marvel T-shirts all my comics and super-heroes shirts, having my desk full of Lego's and different versions of Rubik cubes, showing my tattoos and having long hair in this "serious" or "business oriented" industry when the people who is around me don't even feel the need to learn about what the company really does.
I apologize if this may hurt some feelings or at least flood your news feed ;-), but just wanted to dump what I had in my head at this moment :-)
With much love to this great community,
Luis (oh yes that's my real name LOL).
