Several years ago, my wife and I got into a conversation about the music that's had a huge impact in our lives. We each had a ton of songs that were virtual time machines for us. Whenever we hear them, we are instantly transported to a specific moment or era in our lives. Some songs are indelibly tied to our memories of past experiences, for good or bad. Some of the songs that have this effect on me are songs I don't even like, but when I hear them... BAM! I'm right back in that moment, oh so long ago.
We later discussed this with friends and we all decided to make individual CD mixes of the songs that were a part of the "soundtrack of our lives", which we were then going to listen to at our next gathering. My list became rather extensive, so I decided to make a podcast mix instead, that featured clips of the songs, with me talking about how the songs tied in to particular moments in my life.
It wound up turning into four different podcast mixes, that set out to chronologically represent the soundtrack of my life. You can listen to them by clicking on the links below. (Though I would recommend right-clicking on them and saving the MP3 to your computer or iPod to listen to at your leisure).
Personal Soundtrack Project, Vol. 1 covers the first 14 years of my life - 1970-1984 - and features the music that I was first exposed to... mostly from my parents' influence.
Personal Soundtrack Project, Vol. 2 is nearest & dearest to my heart. It reflects my high school years -- 1984-1988 -- and was really the birth of my musical awakening, where I started to really branch out on my own and discover new worlds, musically. In a lot of ways, the music from that era is some of my favorite music of all, even now.
Personal Soundtrack Project, Vol. 3 concentrates on the music I was listening to from the late 80's to late 90's. This era was a bit of a musical wasteland for me (and contains plenty of stuff that now leaves me scratching my head, wondering why I liked some of it). Still, I decided to leave an accurate historical record of my influences, warts and all.
Personal Soundtrack Project, Vol. 4 represents my musical interests from 1997-2007 (when I completed this project).
Keep in mind that these mixes don't necessarily represent my favorite music (those would be entirely different compilations), but rather the songs that either influenced me greatly, or are stamped into my memory of a certain time in my life.
If you give them a listen, please let me know. I'd love to hear your feedback. Even more, I'd love to hear your own "soundtrack of your life"! Though I don't expect that anyone will go crazy like I did, and actually go through the trouble of putting together mixes, I'd love for you to tell me about the music/songs/artists that have had this effect on you.
Cheers!

I like the comic. I'm probably not the one to ask how it rates though because really I've never read comic books. I've always been a fan of the art though. So I have a feeling I maybe be getting more into it.
