a journey into...MOUNT ISA
* in advance i must admit none of the quotes are accurate
okay so tis lad by the name of John Campbell Miles goes off wandering around the scrub with a pick and shovel and finds this scrap of dirt in 1923 and proceeds to swing his pick digs up some rocks and goes "golley gee this stuffs just jam packed with minerals" he found silver and lead .. both which are still mined there along with copper and zinc. the deposit was mined the following year
population is around 21,000 and sadly that means some one is possibly sleeping with your boyfriend/girlfriend other then you cause your out in the middle of no where and there is nothing on tv
the place has a fairly strong sporting community with cricket, league, rugby, soccer and hockey fairly well represented and some pretty well know sports persons come from there greg norman the golfer and pat rafter the tennis player .
THE ISA ( as it is generally referred to ) has the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere ( well thats what i was told as a kid ) and in conjunction with that there is a street mardi gras ( its a party.. but not like the mardi gras in Sydney with all the barely clad man and shiny floats .. this is just a bunch of pissed yobs in the streets!
There is a 3 screen cinema there.. it was a single screen up until 1996.. i remember cause i worked there
Its pretty damn hot there but its a dry heat so it sure beats the humidity
pretty much no bands play there so live music is local cover bands.. if you want to see a band thats touring australia you head to Brisbane.. and a fair number of kids from the isa migrate down to the gold coast in January to attend the BIG DAY OUT which is the biggest music festival in Australia nad the now non existent LIVID festival
view of the city from the local look out where we spent many a night sitting in winter looking at the below signpost wishing we were else where in the world
There isnt much i miss about the place .. I was born and raised there and it went from a good place to raise kids to a bit of a rough place but i miss friend that are still back there , the fact that the news agent in the main street stayed open till midnight and so did the video shops .. god bless a community that looks after its shift workers!, the chilli pies from lovin oven bakery( sadly no longer around) being able to ride your push bike from one side of town to the other in under half an hour...
I left a little over 4 years ago and swore i would never go back for anything... I refused to return for one of my best friends commitment ceremony .. it was hard i almost broke and went back for it .. but we caught up down here after woods and had fun.. without the heat and fly's.. and he just moved down here so he wised up too lol
i do miss being out bush and how the stars look in the night sky there.. thats the big one
