Ahhhhhh.....I just got back. Left early Friday for Maui with my friends Keala and Bruce. We camped near Hosmer Grove -- I don't like going to the legally designated places, honestly, so we took a couple of turns and made camp in a spot I am 90% sure wasn't legal.
From there, we hiked out Saturday morning to 'Aina Hau Bowl and hooked up with the Halemau'u trail and then to the Keonehe'ehe'e trail to the summit -- yes, this is the hard way to do things. Most people head down for at least part of the way, but damn, that was pretty. That started at about 7000 feet -- went to 8000 feet, down to 7000 again and then up to 10,000.
My legs hurt. A lot.
Camping up there is amazing. Night time, you get so much silence, you can actually hear it -- I mean the kind where you feel this rushing sound and then realize it's the blood in your ears moving. Then a great wind blows down from the summit, shakes the trees and blows out again leaving you with silence.
And it looks like this:
