They say there are two things that strain even the best relationship: wallpapering together, and the Ikea experience. These have apparently lead to screaming matches, silence, even divorce in more than a few couples.
I've never actually tried the former. The latter was attempted over the weekend, with success. The secret is to have a goal in mind. In this case, a couch and a dresser. Be single minded, and do no get overwhelmed by the hoards of humanity pouring into the North York Ikea. The other secret, as I've discovered, is to assemble things in different rooms. It's never good to let a love-interest see you swear at a piece of furniture. Nobody looks hot with an allen-key in their hands. We passed this test.
As a result:
Dresser = built.
Couch = built.
Girlfriend = still speaking with.
Hands = extremely dry.
Everything is set up for the 10'th, when I actually get to sleep in our new place.
As a pleasant side note, both my girlfriend and I somehow missed the fact that our new place has a wrap around balcony on the corner of the building. People watching at the Yonge and Egg intersection is sort of hypnotic.
And, the elevator deposits us pleasantly close to the big Indigo bookstore. This could get VERY expensive.
I can't wait.
