I shaved my head, for first time, on a whim, 27 May 2004. People ask why, and all I can say is, I was in the bathroom and kind of went "hmmm. I wonder".
It is a novel set of experiences -- the whole process, from begining to end. The feel of the razor running through your hair, from the scalp and the head progressively lightening. The sensation of razor on newly exposed skin, shaving from a new, unwatchable angle. The feeling of air and water hitting what used to be protected by thick curly hair.
The first shower after, when you pour shampoo into your hand and realize that showers are suddenly going to be a great deal shorter from now on. Even if you do decide to shave in the shower every time.
It is the change in dynamics doing Pilates on a mat, and having your head stick where it used to slide.
And it is about the reaction from those who know you, or vaguely know you. The guys who say "you are braver than I" or other things that seem, unexpectedly, to approve.
I recommend trying it once in your life. We'll see how long it lasts with me. I think I like it. But I'm fickle, and lazy generally wins; I don't know if the savings in time and decisionmaking based on no-hair will make up for the frequent shaving requirement.
I told my friends by just posting an image to my (real) blog. I told my parents by attaching the image to an email about a different photoset. And I tell you, SG, in a long first post.
