Haven't posted one of these in a while Continuing day book entries:
Day 3 September 17, 2011
Laura
To stay true to myself no matter what.
Not to worry about what others think of me.
To keep a sense of humor no matter how dire things seem.
Day 4 September 18, 2011
34. Hand yourself over to Clotho voluntarily, and let her spin you into whatever she pleases.
Day 5 September 19, 2011
The worst you could imagine is never as bad as you fear, and the best you could imagine always disappoints. Remain neutral towards everything, and you will begin to think nothing of occurrences other than It happened.
Day 6 September 22, 2011
Menta
For showing me what it means to be a friend.
Day 7 September 27, 2011
"If you wish to draw pleasure out of life.
You must attach value to the world." - Goethe
"Better to accept men for what they are, than to take them for what they are not." Chamfort
- de Botton, Consolations of Philosophy pg 175
I think both have merit.
Day 8 September 28, 2011
On Epicurus' list of necessities for happiness
What if someone is unable to obtain one of the elements of happiness? For instance, a socially awkward person who is unable to make friends, or a homeless person who has no way to attain food or shelter. Must they make do with what they can have, or are they simply doomed to unhappiness?
Day 9 September 30, 2011
On the concept of destiny and providence
From Neil Gaiman's Sandman vol. 7: Brief Lives:
"Do you know why I stopped being Delight, my brother? I do. There are things not in your book. There are paths outside this garden. You would do well to remember that." Delirium, a member of the Endless, to her brother, Destiny
Day 10 October 3, 2011
Epicurus' four-fold cure:
Don't fear God,
Don't worry about death,
What is good is easy to get, and
What is terrible is easy to endure
Day 11 October 7, 2011
"We have already seen why we should not worry about death, according to Epicurus. If death is a state of non-existence, there is nothing it is like to be dead. Being dead is not painful, boring, sad or anything else for that matter. Being dead is the same as not being conceived or not existing before your fathers sperm met your mothers egg. We are never sad about missing the times before we existed. We never think that pre-natal non-existence should trouble us. Similarly, says Epicurus, we should not be bothered by posthumous non-existence." Havi Carel, Illness pg 101
Day 12 October 8, 2011
On "vulgar" hedonism
"We normally associate this type of hedonism with excess, putting ones pleasure above everything else, overindulgence and intemperate behavior. We could object to this view on at least three counts.. . because we see certain kinds of behavior as immoral, for example, putting your own pleasure before others." Havi Carel, Illness pg 103
Why is that kind of behavior immoral? Wont placing others pleasure before yours cause you pain at times? I can see why it may be considered immoral if say, we were talking about a serial killer, who takes pleasure in murdering people. But for your average person, why is it such a crime to be concerned with yourself before others?
