New blog time. Nothing has really been going on since my last post. Haven't gamed much lately, just started playing LA Noire literally a couple days ago even though I've had it since launch day. Other than that been playing a lot of MTG, building lots of decks /nerd. It's funny how quickly I got addicted to it again after having quit it could for 8ish years. I think the fact it's something I can do with the gf makes it infinitely better. Other than that, been watching a lot of Deadwood lately, love that show. You should watch it to you cocksuckas. Anyways enough about that boring shit and onto the topic of today's blog: Lady Gaga's Born This Way
For all of you that don't know, I'm am an unabashedly huge Gaga fan, though I don't really consider myself a little monster (I don't really subscribe to any of those nickname's artists like to give their fans).
But I digress, being the fan I am I had the album pre-ordered and have been listening to it heavily all week. I feel like I've listened to it enough times now and given each song time to grow on me so that I could give a pretty fair review. I'll start with briefly going over the feel of the entire album and how it compares to The Fame/Fame Monster, then go over my thoughts on each track, and finally, I'll finish up with my thoughts on the album as a whole.
Overall the album is pretty good. At first I didn't think it was on par with the previous two albums but now I'm feeling better about it. While many of the tracks stay in the same vein as those from the first two albums, there are also quite a few that feel like they'd be on an 80's power pop album as well as a smattering of tracks that I'm going to call Gaga-ized 80s pop. If you're a Gaga fan, you'll at least love half the album. How much you'll enjoy the rest of the album will largely depend on your feelings towards 80's pop. Now, let's dip into the tracks themselves.
First up is "Marry The Night". I liked it, my gf thought it was rather average. It's pretty solid for an opening track and I feel it falls into that "Gaga-ized" 80s pop I mentioned earlier. Some of you more versed in 80s pop than I am may disagree and think it's no different but that's what I'm gonna go with.
Next is the title track, "Born This Way", which the single version has been out for quite awhile so if you follow Gaga at all, you've probably already heard it (and seen the awesome video). I didn't like this track much when I first heard it, but it's really grown on me since then. It's another one I'm tossing in the 80s Gaga pop. Oh and I should say before going any further I'm judging these songs based mostly on the music, not the lyrics. I'm not too huge a critic of nonsense or stupid lyrics. That being said, this track would lose a few points based on lyrical content, just because a pop song about being yourself is so cliche'.
Third we have "Government Hooker", which my gf hated and I loved. Granted I am slightly disappointed it didn't stick with the trippiness of the intro but still, I think it's a great song. This one is strictly in line with most of the stuff from Fame/Fame Monster.
"Judas" is the fourth track, and tied for my favorite on the album. Most people I talk to only thought the song was average but for some reason I just love it. Nothing beats that killer first minute, every time I hear it I feel like dancing my awkward nerdy way of dancing. Plus it's clearly flamebait for crazy Christians (ALLITERATION BITCHES), and we all know how I love to see them squirm.
"Americano" is a rather random inclusion on the album, but it's solid and I feel that it's a spiritual successor to "Alejandro". Random trivia: I thought the song was going to be about the coffee.
I absolutely hated "Hair" the first time I heard it, and I still think it's meh at times from a purely melodic standpoint (I HATE HATE HATE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST AMOUNT OF SAXOPHONE). But I love the lyrics and so it gets a thumbs up from me.
"Scheisse" (No German keyboard sorry) was simply amazing and is my other favorite track on the album. A lot of people bitch about Gaga just mixing up a bunch of different languages for the opening chorus, but I don't really give a shit. It's a plain fun song and it's one I put on repeat quite often.
The first mellow-ish song on the album is "Bloody Mary", and it's probably my third favorite. No particular reason why, it's not distinctly amazing, I just like singing along to it.
After "Bloody Mary" the album gets rather boring to me. The next few tracks are largely hit or miss so I'm just gonna go through them all in this paragraph. "Black Jesus + Amen Fashion" is decent, but despite being one of the shorter tracks, it feels like it takes forever to end and I usually get bored with it after the first minute. The next three, "Bad Kids", "Fashion of His Love", and "Highway Unicorn (Road To Love)" are all pretty reminiscent of 80s pop and all of them bore me to hell (I'm not a big 80s pop fan ) Your mileage may vary.
"Heavy Metal Lover" is when the album starts to pick up again. It's not the best track ever, but at least marks a departure from the yawntasticness of the previous four tracks. Honestly, when I read the song title, I was hoping for a Gaga attempt at metal, but instead we get another solid, yet typical, Gaga track.
"Electric Chapel" is one of the strongest songs on the album and is the last of my favorites. It's an evolution of the Gaga style I feel, and I hope she continues with it in future songs.
"The Queen" is pretty 80sish but fun, and it has a Queen reference so it gets bonus points.
"Youe and I" (No German keyboard again sorry) is the slowest song on the album and also one of the most uninteresting. When Gaga does ballads, they need to be like "Speechless" or they're just forgettable.
"The Edge of Glory" is pure 80s power pop. Again, due to saxophone, I hated this song when I first heard it, but it's growing on me. It's a fun one to blast in your car.
And that's that. I won't review the 5 remix tracks I have on my edition of the cd, but I will say the country version of Born This Way and the Judas remix both disappoint. I think the album was great overall and can't wait to see more from the Mother Monster. Those that are expecting the entire album to be more of the same from The Fame/Fame Monster should probably avoid this one, as unless you're open to change in your musician's styles, you'll probably be disappointed. If, however, you enjoy power pop/are open to new things, I'd give the album a shot, it's a lot of fun if you give it a chance.
