well, the dmv successfully body-slammed me into submission yesterday. here's a quick run-down -- a series of unfortunate youth-oriented novels if you will:
1) i applied for a passport. i don't have american photo id, but i was told my canadian photo id would be fine with my other documents (i had to send in the original copy of my report of birth abroad, remember that for later).
2) i received notice in the mail that i have 90 days to send in american photo id with my application, otherwise it'll be processed as is and will likely be rejected
3) i made an appointment at the dmv, and figured the timing would work out just right. it takes 60 days for california id to arrive, so all in all i was looking at a 5 day window to mail it off to the department of state to remedy my passport application.
4) i was informed at the dmv that a copy of my report of birth abroad was not acceptable. i explained my situation and suggested that since the us government is currently in possession of my original copy, perhaps their inability to share information between departments is not my problem, and i should be able to get the photo id i need for a passport application without the original copy of a document that i had to send in with the passport application in the first place. that didn't go over well.
5) so here i am. i have another month or so until my passport gets rejected, after which i have to make another appointment, then two months later get california id, then four months after that i'll get my passport. fuck that, and fuck everyone involved (including myself for thinking that anything even slightly non-standard would ever get past the various layers of bureaucracy involved).
if anyone wants to hang out, it'll have to be within the continental usa, because i'm not going anywhere for a while.

It looks like I'll be starting this process shortly.
Although, I'm going to get it all going while I'm still up north.
Hoping by the time I make the move to Cali it'll all be over.
