First of all, sorry for not posting for some time - I had my oral exam to pass on basics of theoretical computer science. And I did, yay! :)
Now there is the new version 4.4 of Android, aka Kitkat. This is the first time Google has chosen not a generic name but a brand's product name (Nestlé's). I don't see the purpose of this partnership, but well, that's not what I care about. I like Kitkat.
I own a Huawei Ascend P1 aka U9200. Unfortunately though, Huawei only offers updates up to a beta version of Android 4.1.1 (aka ICS - Ice Cream Sandwich), as well as the source code to a slightly old version of the kernel for ROM developers. Lack of software upgrades is a huge topic concerning Android and it's mainly because of all the brandings I suppose. However, quite as soon as Kitkat was released some of the folks from the XDA developers forum have ported it to work on the U9200. I'm one of the few fellows who just flashed it onto their devices, just because it's possible. And I must say it runs really fast! I don't mind the little drawbacks, i.e., Bluetooth doesn't work (which I don't need) and on screenshots or when turning the device some short little black stripes appear on the screen. What I don't like is that it might crash from time to time when consuming a lot of memory. I'll wait for newer versions, but I'm still keeping the ROM now since it's just running fine.
Tools I'm using: Android debug bridge (adb), fastboot and the TWRP 2.4.4.0 boot image for the Ascend P1. Thanks so much for the great work to all those involved! :)
P.S.: XDA developers have been doing an amazing job for a decade already. I also have an older HTC Touch Diamond and back then tested several ROMs that were aiming at more efficiency both concerning use of the few resources and battery lifetime. I even got to run some Android 2.x on it - not at all usable, but it was possible and fun to do. My recommendations to any smartphone user: Have no fear, root your phone, upgrade it, make use of its capabilities and rock the web! =)
