Today a friend of mine, Big Phil, 33 years old, is being laid to rest. I only knew him for a few years. He was so kind and would do anything to make someone smile. The first time I met him I thought 'don't mess with this fucker', he was 6'5" and built, he was also quiet. After about 30 minutes of being around him, he opened up and we were laughing together and having fun. Randomly I brought up music, specifically Saul Williams, sure as shit Big Phil loved him. It was a 'did we just become best friends?!' moment. One night Phil and I were cruising, a beautiful summer night, blasting The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust, singing along horribly. Phil was surprised that I could keep up with Saul's rapping. As horrible as that evening started, it was made up for with that. Opioid dependency is a terrible thing, but that's not how I'll remember Phil. I'll remember him as the big, funny, caring person he was. Love you Big Phil.
