'Is your dream of serenity a broken watch
That you shake and shake but can't get ticking?
Are the voices in your head paranoid alcoholics who
Breathe in your face and say: "You know you deserve us"?'
- Mark Eitzel, 'Tell it to the lonely fairy in the forest'
I remember quoting the last two lines from this vice in my (paper) diary about three years ago, at which point my answer to Eitzel's question was 'Yes, oh yes'. Now I'm not so sure, although the first two lines ring as true as ever.
Speaking of that time, three years ago, that I thought I'd left behind, I had an unexpected phone call today from an old friend who's getting married and in town for his bachelor party and wants me to come along. Which I will. So this is gonna be short (relatively) cos I have shift my ass.
This also means that the sixth film in the six-films-in-seven-days marathon is going to have to wait for another time, although I did see numbers 4 and 5. Don't have a great deal to say about them, I think all my film-wonder for the week was used up on Tarkovsky... But anyway:
4. was The Twilight Samurai, which was quiet and slow and restrained in the way I like, and made me think about trying to persuade my employers to let me re-train in Japanese and add Japanese cinema to my teaching and research 'portfolio'.
5. was the new Almodovar, Bad Education, which, as usual, was full of gaudy coloured sets, convoluted plots and sexy boys. Gael Garcia Bernal looks great in drag!
Gotta go, bar is calling.
I'm away all next week, visiting my druggy pal PCH, picking up stills at the British Film Institute, then seeing my parents, back next Friday. May or may not be able to plug into you all between now and then, but stay sexy all the same.

the frenetic pace of the movie suited my frame of mind. I ended up back at the University of Chicago with a gigantic archival quality blood-red poster - the fashion photographer straddling the model who is splayed out underneath him
I never did finish the Classical Language degree I started there
I like the impressionistic style of italian cinema - not for everybody
