Considering that I work for ABC television here in the states, I think I have a pretty good perspective on the matter. And no, the government really doesn't have any say in what we show on air. They are completely seperate entities. We are only limited by what information we can find and by our own sensibilities about what is or is not relevent or important.
As for discrepencies between Canadian and United States publications, I am sure that there are some. But since I have no idea the veracity of the Canadian publications that you might be referring to, it's difficult to know why they exist.
