I started reading House of Leaves a few days ago.
I'm not usually one to be scared by books or movies all that easily. I actually go out of my way to find movies that might actually scare me; I still haven't found one. Given this, it is with no small consideration that I say this: This book is shit your pants terrifying. Not so much in what is displayed in the book, which are scary, don't get me wrong, but how Danielewski represents the complete, abject terror being experienced by his characters is what's really frightening.
I might be maybe a fifth, not even, of the way into the book right now. I have no intentions of stopping.
