I've wanted to start an internet radio station for a couple years now. I would do the active rock format but I'd mix in some of the bands that don't get a lot of airplay in the US. I'd seek out bands that have great music but haven't made it big yet. I'd find the new music as well. A band can put out a new song but it won't get played on the radio for months. I've always wondered why. I suspect it is to find out if it will be popular first.
The only thing holding me back is the music licensing. When I looked up the costs in February 2022, it was going to cost $2300 (and it will go up each year). I did some research to help offset the costs once I'm running. But the upfront costs are the problem. ...I should see if they raised their prices since I last looked. My current job has us working four ten hour shifts. Maybe I can find a part time job of Fridays and bank that cash. I would be ready to go by spring.
