My First Ever Patient Complaint...
"Those Mexicans that you have working here, have to change their spiritual place. People who are born here don't treat people like that."
Those were the words told to my supervisor by a patient today who wished to file a complaint about the unprofessional attitude of her nurse and the EDT. Yes I was the EDT and YES she refered to me as a Mexican. Her nurse was the only other Chinese person that works in my department. So in this persons world two black haired, slant eyed, yellow skinned people are refered to as Mexicans. I am still greatly perplexed at this... I've been called a lot of things in my life but NEVER a Mexican. No offense to Mexicans but I find this insulting because I in no fucking way LOOK LIKE A MEXICAN!!!
What amazed me was this womans complaint. She was upset because I didn't close the door while performing a procedure... The procedure in question? Taking her blood pressure and heart rate while she was lying down. Needless to say I did not offically get written up.
-------------------------------------
Today hit hard. I saw a former patient today in the Emergency Room. This woman had beaten everything. Cancer, Heart Disease, but the cancer came back and right now it doesn't look good. It's hard not to let some patients get to you but after seeing her through the rehabilitation program it just hurt me to see her so drained. As much as I love medicine I can't stand two things; drawing blood from babies and seeing patients wither away.
