6/10
Overall Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania was an enjoyable movie…it just wasn’t outstanding either.
Paul Rudd & the rest of the cast were good, the story was (mostly good), & there were some really memorable scenes. That being said you can tell two things: 1) This movie was shot during lockdown & 2) The studio had some things they needed to set up, organically or not, and they were going in the movie. As such, they have some character choices/story beats that feel forced & a little dumb. It’s not a tremendous problem, but it did take me out of the story a time or two
Where the movie shines is in the acting. Paul Rudd”s Scott Lang is charming & sincere Kathryn Newton comes to play as Cassie (Scott’s daughter) & makes the character her own right out the gate. But the standout performance is definitely Jonathan Majors as the main bad guy who doesn’t even get name dropped as anything other than “The Conqueror” until over halfway through the movie - he’s having a great time taking a kind of bland character from the comics & making him absolutely menacing - he is just a tremendous actor. Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer), Hope (Evangeline Lily), & Hank (Michael Douglas) all have their times to shine, but they’re definitely the supporting cast. There were a few cameos that I enjoyed + William Jackson Harper (Chidi on The Good Place) & Bill Murray were the most notable.
The ending felt a bit off - like they wanted to do something else, but pulled back. Not bad, not enough to ruin the film imo, but not where I thought it would go.
There are two post credits scenes.
