The next day after I got off work I went home and took a quick nap and then got up and decided to drag my dad along to Powell's City of Books so I could sell some books.
powell's is used and new, yes? i've heard of powell's, and occasionally see ads in magazines i read. i'd like to visit sometime, but i just haven't had occasion to be in portland.
a couple indie SF bay area indie bookstores have closed their doors for good recently: cody's berkeley telegraph avenue flagship on july 10 and a clean well-lighted place for books in SF a couple weeks ago. cody's on telegraph was a favorite spot of mine, as they had probably the best collection of urban and transportation planning books of any general bookstore i've known. i never had the chance to go to ACWLPFB. it's definitely getting tough for indie bookstores to stay in business in the time of amazon and big-box volume bookstores like borders.
