It's sort of hard for me to quantify 'geekiness' because all my interests are (to an extent) geeky. My job, my hobbies. Anyone who willingly sits and tinkers with images in Bridge/Photoshop for SG (while listening to various fandom podcasts) is going to be a geek.
It all started in school with LiveJournal. I created my LJ back in late 2002 when it was invite only (wooahh). I used to use the library computers at lunch time to blog about my life, writing, and whatever else. I had a few friends that sat in there with me, we shunned the sunlight and were very dramatic. I was a member of a bunch of LJ groups, most of them related to my city or to Harry Potter and the Tamora Pierce books. I was so cool. I remember all the big flame wars, the 'fandom wank' group on JournalFen, the whole explosion of drama when Cassandra Claire (the fanfic writer, this is pre-publication) turned out to be plagiarizing most of her work. I remember Sixapart buying the company and then the influx of Russian blogs and members... I used LiveJournal religiously until I finished highschool, then casually for a year or two before I became involved with Suicidegirls. I've been blogging on here ever since. Which actually means I've been blogging for something like half my life. What a book THAT would make.
I remember in school, one of my English teachers getting all excited when she found out I was writing fiction for fun. She read some of my stuff and said that it was good, but I had to develop my voice. So I blogged for 12 years. Now, I have a pretty good voice when I write. Haha. I still keep up with lots of geeky stuff, I check the website Hypable before I check the newspaper. I have a personal tumblr, I go to conventions in Australia (one day maybe I'll get my ass to ComicCon in the US) and attend all the 'writing masterclasses', I listen to a LOT of podcasts, and I still write. A lot. Two (unpublished) novels so far. So I guess not a lot has changed since 2002.
The geekiest thing about me, though? I'm a fangirl.
That feeling of squee when a new episode of Sherlock is released. That shaking excitement when you're meeting Misha Collins in the flesh (pictured). Wanting to jump up and down and squeal because of the Game of Thrones filming spoilers. Meeting someone else who GETS why the Eleventh Doctor is your doctor. Nostalgia at the memory of the first Harry Potter movie premiere... that stuff makes me happier than almost anything else. I love it.
I know that fangirls have a bit of a reputation. The squealing idiots that read fan-fiction about a naked Dean Winchester tied to a bed in space. The young women who (allegedly) chase Benedict Cumberbatch down the street. But you know what? Once you've been me for as long as I have and you've gotten enough insane private messages from dick-pic guys on Instagram, you realise that that stuff? 'Aint even that weird. I think a lot of THAT side of it is just the vilification of female sexuality anyway. But that's a topic for another day (and one that's been covered by people infinitely more knowledgeable than me). But that reputation doesn't matter to me. I love obsessing over fictional characters, I love reading the next book, watching the next episode, theorising about what's going to happen next, analyising whatever has already happened until I'm finding set pictures and trying to zoom in on the props on the mantelpiece. That shit gives me LIFE.
I will always be a fangirl first and a writer second. My own novels are alright, maybe one day they might even be GOOD and I will be able to squee over my own characters as much as I do over other people's. Until then, I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing because I fucking love it and there's nothing in the world quite like it.
Oh! Just quickly before I forget, thank you so much for your love on my new set Hypothermia. It really was the coldest I've ever been in my life so I'm glad you like it and it was worth the pain. If you haven't already, please go leave it some love (a like and a comment, don't forget both!) and hopefully I can crack 2k likes soon!
Here's some more geeky things from my life:
My Harry Potter tattoo. It's a Dumbledore quote from the first book. I went a bit hipster with my HP tattoo, decided against the popular deathly hallows symbol and went for something from the first book. I read it in about 2000? I grew up with that series, I loved it so much and it's shaped so much of who I am. As for Dumbledore? He's a genius! Best wizard in the world! But he is a bit mad, yes.
Me losing my shit that time I found a TARDIS in someone's front garden. I trespassed to get this photo. I don't seem to break in places where I shouldn't be unless it's for photos now that I think about it. SG has a lot to do with that. Ha.
Sydney Supanova. One of the best weekends ever. I learnt SO much in all the different seminars. Robin Hobb's really stands out, though. So fun. And I spent way too much money.
My 'writer's mug' with all my favorite writers at the time. I think my list is slightly different now, but I still use this mug all the time when I'm doing my own writing. Dark magic.
I had more pics, but you've seen a lot of them in other blogs before so I won't bore you by repeating myself.
Here's something you HAVEN'T seen, though!
YEAH! @delilahjayne shot a set today!
I am so glad to see this lady FINALLY becoming a hopeful! The set is fucking STUNNING you will all love it. It'll be popping into the queue soon. It's shot by @exkyu and he did a fantastic job. It will be a bit of a wait, though, the member review queue is super long. But go follow @delilahjayne and then you'll be able to see it as soon as it comes out! If you don't want to wait that long, the rest of @exkyu's work is right here ready for your perusal. Haha.
I think I've talked enough for one blog, but before I go, I want to give a shout out to the following amazing dudes for supporting me on patreon last month: Anthony, Billy, Brendan, Chris, Cameron, James, Jesse, Josh, Michael and Shane. You legends!!!!
Have a good weekend, everyone!
