yesterday at 12:15 am i was hit by an SUV while riding my bike. the kid driving ran a stop sign while going about 20 mph, never even braking until he hit me. i was already in the intersection when i saw him barrelling towards me and knew that, unless he stopped suddenly or a giant hand reached out of nowhere to swoop me out of his way, there was nothing i could do to avoid being hit.
so, i peddled faster and veered left to at least minimize the impact. he t-boned my right side and after being slammed to the left and hitting the ground, my bike and i were scraping across the ground as he drove over us. my bike got lodged under the center of his vehicle as i rolled out into the middle of the intersection.
i was wearing a leather jacket and boots, which probably helped minimize the road rash and injuries as well as being on my steel-frame chopper bike rather than the aluminum-frame cruiser. the bike is a twisted scrap that will never ride again, but i believe it took the brunt of the force rather than crumpling under me.
my right ankle is broken on both sides, but the boots kept the bones aligned so i don't have to have surgery, and my right shoulder has muscle swelling and torn ligaments, but i'm alive. i can't fucking believe i'm alive.
pictures of the bike will be uploaded next time i have access to a faster connection than my cell phone.
what a surreal thing to have lived through...
