it turns out the cat isn't dead. it got smacked hard by the car, though, and suffered a broken pelvis.
but, the lady (a term i use loosely with regard to this particular individual) who owns the poor creature decided not to have the surgery done because $2100 was too much to spend on a cat. rather than be a responsible pet owner and make the hard decision to have the cat euthanized since she wasn't going to pay to fix it, she's decided to keep the cat immobilized in this little isolation box for 2 months on all sorts of pain meds so it'll heal on its own.
bitch.
i want that cat more than ever now. and, i want to see some car run her ass down, leaving her with a broken pelvis and loved ones who don't value her life enough to end her suffering either by providing her with the necessary medical treatment or putting her out of her misery.
seriously, bitch in the extreme.
of course, i'm a little sensitive about this issue because my mom kept my dog after i moved out. when the dog got old she 1) went blind, 2) went deaf, 3) lost the use of her back legs, 4) had kidney disease, and 5) had what my mom kept saying was a "wart" growing out of her eye. i asked my mom to put her to sleep or to let me do it and she refused, claiming she still "had a lot of joy in life". finally one night my mom awoke to the dog having a massive seizure. she died a couple minutes after getting to the emergency vet hospital, before anything could be done to help her or ease her pain. it turns out that "wart" was really a massive brain tumor that had grown so large it had nowhere else to go but out the eye socket and her death was caused by an aneurism of the tumor. her last years were uncomfortable at best and her death was long, painful, and entirely unnecessary.
modern medicine, super-engineered foods, and the absence of natural selection in their habitat keeps pets alive far longer than their little bodies were intended sometimes. as pet owners, we have taken on a responsibility to look into our loyal companions eyes and know that the right thing for them is to let go.
so, even though i'm so piss-poor i can barely scrape money together to eat most days, i'm going to try to take up a collection to pay for the cat's surgery myself and rescue it from that woman. any suggestions?
