Rock 'n Roll Dudes!
I got a call yesterday afternoon, from a musician friend. "Foreigner wants us to be their guest at a concert tonight, including back-stage passes, want to go? Ha! Does the Pope shit in the woods? I'm there baby!
So, the concert turned out to be three groups - Blue Oyster Cult, Foreigner, and Styx.
1. Blue Oyster Cult opened for the other two, at 6:30 PM. The sun was still up . . . the venue was half empty, and so was their performance! These guys are still getting professional gigs because their name is recognizable, I guess. Strictly ho-hum! I went for a beer!
2. The last time I saw Foreigner, the founding members were aging, to the point where some of them were having difficulty with the songs. I felt bad, at the time. Well . . . . I'm here to tell you . . . founding member Mick Jones, has completely re-constituted this band with new talent . . . and they were hot as a fucking pistol! The drummer, Jason Bonham, is the son Led Zeppelin's original drummer, John Bonham, and man oh man, can he beat the skins! Foreigner has always had one of the very best books of hits . . . and they played every one of them . . flawlessly! These guys were better than they have been for 20 years! The now-packed crowd, was on its feet, "helping" them sing every song! These guys rocked! The new lead singer, Kelly Hansen, is fabulous, and has an incredible vocal range! If Foreigner comes your way . . . . Don't walk . . run to Ticketmaster! See 'em! You'll be real glad you did!
3. Styx . . . here's a band I never paid much attention to. Big Fucking Mistake! The three founding guitar players, were joined by a brilliant new keyboard player, Lawrence Gowan, who has more energy and showmanship, than anyone I've seen in many years! These guys come at you with hard rockin' guitars, and crisp, well-blended vocals, that just blow you out of your seat! Song after Song! You were on your feet for these guys . . . clapping, tapping, singing, swaying . . . and you found yourself smiling 'till it hurt! This high energy band, hasn't forgotten how to have fun on the stage, while delivering a great performance to their fans!
Gotta go now . . . . I need to buy some Styx CDs!
