Wow, lots of comments on my last entry. Id like to think it was the halter top, but I did leave it up for quite a while. Since I went on-call at my other job Im only working three days a week so I have more time to work on stuff, which is fantastic.
I mentioned this before, but the time is drawing closer. Theres an event in Bowling Green Ohio from June 17-19 called the Allied Media Conference. Its geared to zine people, but there will also be artists, filmmakers, and all kinds of DIYers. Im driving down with a few friends to sell some zines and cards and check out what other people are doing. This will be my first time attending, and Id love it if any of you Chicago people wanted to tag along. If youre interested, contact me for more details.
Im writing an article on social networking sites like MySpace and Friendster. I want to look at how these sites have changed the way we communicate and interact with each other. And yes, I will probably include SG in my article as well. I want to open with a personal narrative on my childhood experiences with penpalling and mail art. We used to pass around these things called Friendship Books and Slams. They were basically a way to meet new people and express your creativity. I see a lot of similarities between that kind of thing and online communities. I also want to look at why certain sites (like MySpace for example) are more popular than others. Im trying to get an interview with creator, but I dont have a lot of time. Hey, heres an idea: If you make a comment on this entry and I like it, Ill use it in my article (with your permission, of course).
Im excited about this project I think its a very relevant topic and I hope to get it published in the near future. Does anyone have ideas for magazines that accept freelance work? Im thinking maybe Bust or this magazine 944 out of Phoenix, but there are lots of options.
Im obsessed with the idea of being a freelance writer now. Ive decided not to give up on Education, though. I want to teach and its a good stability job, but if I can make enough money writing, Im going to do it. The stories are out there especially in a big city like Chicago. Theyre everywhere and its just a matter of writing them down. There is no shortage of ideas, and what I cant publish for money, Ill publish on my own.
I love my class so fucking much. I love feeling like I have so much to contribute and knowing people are interested in what I have to say. I made a new friend, too! Her name (well, the name Ive given her-long story) is Kate Brown. Here she is drinking and looking cute.
And since I seem to be going out even more than usual (stories, stories, stories journalists are always working, ha) Ill end this entry with some more party pictures.
