So I got back from Europe a week ago today. The travelling to and from Europe was the worst part of the trip. On the way there, our (mine and my sisters) flight from Phoenix to Dallas was delayed, which meant we missed our flight to London, which meant we missed our flight Amsterdam, which meant we missed our hotel in Amsterdam, and in addition to that, we had to spend a night in Dallas, which sucked. Oh, and we had to book a new flight out of London.
Anyways, we lost about $300 in our first 36 or so hours of travels. Anyways, so we got to London and got another flight out. We flew into Brussels, and then took the bus up to Antwerp. It's a nice city. We spent five days in Antwerp, and during that time we also took a day trip to Amsterdam.
Amsterdam was fun, except the weather. We walked along for a few hours, but then it started to rain, and I was caught in it without an umbrella or jacket. That sucked. I was cold and wet. So we decided to stop at a Coffee Shop near the station, so as not to get lost. But after smoking a little bit, it was still confusing making our way back to the station and finding our train. And the smoking would have been more enjoyable if I hadn't been wet and cold.
After Antwerp, we went back to Brussels, and stayed there for 3 days. It's more or less like Antwerp, just twice as big. We walked around a bit, and my sister had a friend there, so we got to hang out a bit and go out more. One night, we went to his house and made dinner... Hmm, frog legs and snails. The snails were pretty good, but I didn't really like the taste or texture of the frog legs.
Then we went off to Paris, where we spent three days, pretty much just walking around, taking the metro, and seeing the sights. The Eiffel tower, Arch D'Triumph, The Louvre (we didn't go in), Notre Dame, the Catacombes.
Pretty city, though it rained there a lot too.
Then we took the night train to Milano. There was a pretty, blonde, model looking type from Kazakstan, with her grandfather, in the train compartment with us. Also a british girl, and an aussie girl.
We got to Milano... My city... and it was pretty boring, as I suspected. I never really was one for that city. But I did get to hang out with some people from my old host families. I saw my old host sister Cecilia for a bit, and my sister and I hung out with my old host brother and his friend for two nights. The first night we went out for drinks in Monza, and the second night we went out to this part of Milano that I didn't even know about before this trip. It's this little strip of bars along a canal. We went to a really cool brewery there, and just a little bit drunk.
Anyways, after Milano, we went to Ferrara, where my sister knew a girl. We stayed with her and her boyfriend Luca (both very nice people) for three days, during which there was a really cool festival going on in the city called the Busker Festival. During the day, we would walk around the town and see the sights, and at night we would walk around with the huge crowds of people, to listen to music, drink some beers, etc. I have to say that never before have I seen so many pretty girls in such a small area. Ferrara was awesome.
After Ferrara, we went to Genova, where we stayed with an Aussie friend of ours. I like that city a lot, and we went out every night. The first night we just went to a little bar on a barge in the bay. The second night we went to "Festa dell'unita'" and had some drinks and listened to the ska bands playing. And the last night we went to a bar called Liquid, where on Tuesday nights they have a deal where if you buy a beer, you get a refill for free. So lots of people were there, drinking the local beers and smoking hash cigs. I partook in both, and it was quite fun.
The last day, we took a walk around 3 of the 5 terre, just an hour train ride from Genova. It's a beautiful place, but it sucked that we had to walk around with our backpacks on. I want to try and find a place there next summer to sublet...
We went back to Milano, stayed the night, and the next day we flew out of Milano. We flew to London, and had a 16 hour layover. I stayed up almost the entire time, and was bored off my ass. We flew back from London to Dallas, to Arizona.
Except being so expensive, it was a great three weeks!
