Spring, so far...and about time for another blog.
I've been in the financial fuckbar land for a bit now - sounds familiar, huh? Still, things seem to come around to ease the pain a bit. A friend I haven't seen in something like 20 years comes into town to work on re-shingling his dad's house, and offers me some work. How can I refuse? My 40-year old bones wonder what the hell I'm doing, but it feels good to have them ache over some real work for a change. Standing on a roof, realizing my equilibrium ain't as bad as I thought, is good too. Granted, I'm still careful. I don't overestimate my skills as something better than a trapeze artist, what with my beer belly and all. Anyway, there was beers and good food fed to us after a hard day's work, and sleep was easy to come by those nights. Still, I walked a bit like an old man for a day or two, I gotta admit. And it was good to hang out with my buddy R - we still gotta get out for wings and beers, or something. Catching up over shingles ain't always the best way to reconnect. A more relaxed setting is needed.
In other news, I saw two great concerts within the last two weeks. This past Saturday I saw Neko Case perform in a church! Fifth pew from the front, centre. Blessed be me! Haha! She's got the voice to give you chills, and is just so unpretentious, ya gotta love her. After the show, got to hang out with my buddy D, share a joint with him, and a few beers, along with his wife and another friend. You know those type of friends that you hang out with, and you just feel so relaxed and good? That be them. They lead a life that I can't help but admire. Good karma all the way.
Anyway, the other show I saw was just last night at the Cadillac Lounge on Queen St. W. Band called the Neil Young'uns, which are, as you might expect, a Neil Young cover band. Holy shit, they rocked! They've got one more Tuesday night to play at that venue, next week. I highly recommend them. If you have any inclination for some Neil, I'd hit that for sure! I'm not even a huge Neil fan, like some, but the band put on a great show. Solid players, and the lead guy does have a striking resemlance to Neil, especially when he's got his shades on! A friend is coming into town next week, so I'll hopefully be able to bring her there. Oh yeah, and I'd HIGHLY recommend the outdoor patio at the Cadillac. It's gonna be above 20 degrees this weekend, so you know that place is gonna be PACKED! And I might even be tempted to go there too, just to hang out, eat some food, drink beers, and smoke like a fiend. I'll save you a seat.
What else? Hmmm. I'll probably be at the Dakota Tavern this Friday night. Guy named Ridley Bent playing, whom I know from my days back in Vancouver, along with another guy called Dustin Bentall. Any excuse to go to the Dakota is good. I'll hopefully be sitting at the bar, drinking a beer and a whiskey, and enjoying the show. Drinking doubles and acting single! Oh wait...I AM single. Ah well.
I've also been taking courses at George Brown, on the King St. E. campus. (which reminds me, I have an assignment to finish. Argh) I discovered a great bar in the area, called Betty's, on King near Sherbourne. Seems it has been around for years, but I never knew it! They've got a patio too, which is good to know, considering one of my courses at George Brown runs into July! Guess what I'll be doing after my class on Thursdays? Haha. Anyway, I liked the vibe of the place - much better than that shithole Gabby's up the road.
Damn, there's a lot of bar references in this blog. I think I have a problem...it's the fact that I'm writing this blog, and am not at a bar somewhere. Heh. It's a bit early in the day for me, and it's not warm enough out yet, but this weekend, maybe I'll see ya around.
And so ends this longer-than-usual springtime blog.
