I held a sheep's brain in my hands today. It was squishy and smooth, parts of nerves were hanging down, and the cerebellum had part of the spinal cord still attatched. Preserving fluid was drenching over it so that I had to be careful in handling it. Only one was dropped onto the floor (not by me). A popular thought amongst some people is that we only use about 10% of our brain. I'm not sure who or how this though got started, but it couldn't be any further from the truth. Studies in my brain psych class have shown it to be nearly the opposite, we use about 90% of our brain (not an exact #). As I held this small organ in my hand, no bigger than the size of a baseball, its wonderous to ponder how this used to be active at one time, but now rests in my hands as an object for observation. Oh if only this sheep could see itself now. Its 15 mintues are up and now its my time to make sense of nothing.
I wasn't grossed out at all by squishing certain parts to open up to other brain matter, but what did disturb me were the Christian protesters just outside the classroom window sitting up large cardboard posting professing abortion to be evil and murderous. Of course they have their right to set up shop in such a way, nothing forceful is occuring, but does one have the right to subject others to theological stupidity. I have really concluded that the religious can't have any say on moral issues as long as they do so from a stance of faith. Faith in itself is a belief in the uncertain, otherwise it wouldn't be faith. That being so, they are without hesitation before other possibilities to proclaim the right to truth through a being that has no grounds for being able to relate to those that so horrible live through his creation. Life and morality are for we sinners and scientists, for those that pursue it and make it their endeavor to live, not to wait for an after-life, or a world beyond that has no relevence to us whatsoever. God has condemned himself as being inappropriate in that his participance among we the living is nonexistent. Some say he creates miracles for us, but that again is done at a distance. What does he know of being so desparate that he begs for that miracle? When has he become unexpectedly pregnant and had to face the fact that he will have to undergo the pain of having something grow inside him not knowing exactly what to do with it when it comes out? It was easy for him to pass the burden onto Mary, Jesus' true parent.
Let Lucifer be your guide and seek knowledge. Are the cells prior to fetus stage a living being? Not so easy a question given that what must be defined is what is a living being? And also like most predicaments, its a question that's much easier to debate by those that aren't currently experiencing it. Talking about something and living it are 2 fissure size dichonomies.
