Week 6 at The Enterprise and I have finally hired my first crew member. She presented very differently at work to the interview and the Captain and I were concerned that we made a mistake hiring her after three days. She is a bit of an oddball which was cool with us, since we don't exactly fit the cookie cutter mold in la la land. There was something else though and I could not put my finger on it and made it my mission to find out: Why could this lady not "engage" with us. Why did she keep to herself so much? Why did she have this black cloud hovering over her? Why wasn't she a team player? Hmmmm.

I got the answers when I took her home in my Cone of Silence - my Car, where everyone seems to spill their guts to me unprompted. She mentioned in our initial interview she was temping...well...sort of..She then told me she took another job before the other publishing company folded their magazine. This publisher that hired her before us went into receivership and basically threw out all the staff without notice or pay...No wonder..She is still carrying alot of bitter baggage and is shit scared we will inflict similar crap on her...

I reassured her thar our organisation was stable and in a period of planned growth. I also told her that I want her to succeed in this role. I am her mentor and manager, not some Ogre that will micro manage her and treat her like shit. Let's hope it works out. I have set her some tasks and re-focused her so that she will be more effective during her probationary period.
