I bought Corporate Ghost, the Sonic Youth DVD. There's something really satisfying about hearing about their exploits with other musicians I respect, like Kim Deal, Kathleen Hannah, Mike Watt, Steven Malkmus, Sleater-Kinney, etc. It's like one big experimental indie club that I would like nothing more than to join. The music videos are good overall, and mostly improve as they follow the band through their...

Arielle mailed me Sufjan Steven's "Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lakes Sate." Which, unsurprisingly, is really great. It's lighthearted and beautiful, unassuming and simple at times, but on songs like "Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head! (Rebuild! Restore! Reconsider!)" there's a complexity that lets the confidence of the band really shine through.

This album will find its way into your heart if you have any...

Finally got my hands on a copy of M83's "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts." And it really is everything the Pitchfork review made it out to be. A great mix of Godspeed, Mogwai, and (vaguely Underworldish) electronics. It's very dramatic, but delivers on its promise to be affecting. I highly recommend it.

In other news, I've been listening to Broken Social Scene's "You...

Here's the Coachella breakdown:

Pretty Girls Make Graves: They definitely had the guitarist from Les Savy Fav playing with them, which rocked. Show was all right. Singer needs to go. Annoying voice, stupid lyricist, looks like Kelly Osborne.

!!!: Though I have a sick fascination with dancepunk, the show was still only mediocre. Worse lyrics than PGMG, more annoying frontperson.

Atmosphere: Oh wow. So bad....

You should see the copy of this one prefuse 73 album in the radio station. It's so incredibly fucked from years of scratching that it has the weirdest scratch pattern ever on it.

Too bad the cure is lame live. It's probably because their best stuff is when they play Pornography tracks live... and those are like 23 years old...

Just saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with Arielle and Bree. Really, really amazing film. Definitely my favourite Kaufman so far.

Also, Arielle is a fantastic person who has decided to go to Wesleyan instead of (the superior) Reed. She will change her mind sooner or later, won't she?

hi!
I'm glad to see you hereabouts! i Haven't been participating on sg in forever (what with... school and stuff) but it'll definitely be online more often in the upcoming weeks. Do you know where you're living next year?
I'm not sure if I'll be up to latin in summer-- I really need to get hardcore into reviewing german this summer, using the langauage labs etc... tongue I'll be in pdx all summer (I'm coordinator for next years' orientation, so I get a free apartment & lots of blings biggrin). Let me know what you're up to this summer!

Is Tessa coming next year/
comrade:
German is definitely on my list of things to learn. I'm not sure where I'm living next year, but definitely off campus and definitely with Colin, so I need to talk to him about that. Also, not only is Tessa coming next year, but Tiffany will be joining us as well! Oh, and this kid from SJC who's in my Greek tutorial. He's all right, but I'm not thrilled or anything.

Mostly I'll be working on EMT stuff this summer--"upgrading" my license to California EMT-1 and then NR-EMT, plus possibly taking a class in Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support. All at UCLA. Should be fun, I guess. I'll be really looking forward to going back to Reed.

Now that I've got a fancy-schmancy trauma/O2 kit, I'm looking to do some volunteer medical work in/around LA this summer. If anyone has an ideas then let me know. My current license is New Mexico EMT-STAR, which is basically the same as a Wilderness EMT-Basic anywhere else, but with a few extra protocols and one or two protocols lacking.
