As we enter this holiday weekend I ask myself why did I just spent 2 hours playing an online game (first person shooter, capture the flag)? I could have been doing so many more constructive things... like sleeping, getting up early and working on my garden for the first time in several years (though the strawberries continue to grow like a virus - I wonder if that is how the Strawberry people planned to invade originally, through sweet tasty goodness).
But alas, no. I have become addicted to the online drug. Its a fleeting buzz too. The "episodes" last about 20 minutes, they are catalogued for that time period and then all the stats are discarded and the next episode (and a new "map") begin. There may be sites that do keep track of things for their "clans" but I have not joined one so I do not know if this is true. Granted, I haven't asked either. So it goes, in 20 minute buzzes for a high that lasts several hours... at least until you hit "quit" or the server gives out. I find that I am spending more and more time on this game. No other game seems to be as fun, and I have never met or talked much to the other players. I recognize the screen names that they use, but couldn't tell you what most of them are now. Nico comes to mind, but that was a player on a server that became unavailable when I downloaded a patch for the game. One player in the "CTF United Noob" server that I join most often has the words (in yellow and green) Mountain Dew, but there are other characters also and I couldn't tell you what they are. I know that FantasyGirl (letters in Pink) runs the server (I'm guessing that the reason behind her name is because a girl that games with the guys nowadays online is a gamer guy's fantasy), but other than these screen names I couldn't tell you any of the names... and I just came off the game before writing this update.
I wonder what people did before television, before the telephone, before any telecommunication, including the mail. Before the light bulb even. I can only imagine that most people were farmers growing enough crops to live off of and spending their entire day from sunrise to sunset working the fields just to stay alive. They kept in shape, sure.. but what about after the sun went down, did they sleep 10 hours or so until sunrise, did they read the same books (if they had any other than the Bible) over and over. Did they try to read and understand the bible, or just read that which they knew and pray to survive another day. What about kings? What did they do after sundown? What a boring day they must have had too. I wonder...
Aah fuck it. Back to the game....
