Dear Government,
It has recently come to my attention that a small amount of my tax money has gone towards detaining and deporting seventies folk icon Cat Stevens from the country. While it is obvious to all of us that securing America's borders and stopping potential threats from entering the nation is certainly a good thing, many of us are curious about the detention of a man whose most well known crimes are adopting the hokey name of Yusef Islam and of recording a Muslim children's CD that ranks up there with anything Jimmy Swaggart or Jack Van Impe has to offer.
In fact, barroom and water cooler chit-chat around this nation has led most citizens to believe the author of "Peace Train" and "Father and Son" is not a threat to anyone except those of us who didn't enjoy Harold and Maude. Just like the detention of Ted Kennedy, it's alarming and somewhat stupid to those of us who are trying hard to be proud of our country in such trying times.
Finally, those of us who have heard about how you required the jet carrying Mr. Stevens to turn around in mid-air and land in the small town of Bangor are curious about how a 57-year-old ex-pop star could warrant something so... stupid.
I am hereby requesting the one twentieth of one cent I contributed to the fee of Mr. Steven's deportation.
Love,
Neal
